Should You Put ‘Online’ on Your Resume? How to List Your Degree

This is one of the most frequently asked questions from online degree students, and the answer is pretty straightforward: no, you don’t need to specify that your degree was earned online.

HERE’S WHY

In most cases, your diploma says the same thing whether you studied online or on campus. The degree is the same. The accreditation is the same. There is no obligation — ethical or otherwise — to label it as “online.”

Think of it this way: nobody puts “evening programme” or “summer session” on their resume. The mode of delivery doesn’t change the credential.

HOW TO LIST IT

Format your education section like any other graduate:

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration University Name, City, State Graduated: May 2026

That’s it. If your school has a separate online entity (like Purdue University Global vs. Purdue University), you should use the official name of the institution that appears on your diploma. Don’t misrepresent a Purdue Global degree as a Purdue West Lafayette degree.

WHEN IT MIGHT COME UP

In interviews, you might be asked about your educational experience. This is fine. Be honest and confident. You can say something like: “I completed my degree online while working full-time, which required strong time management and self-discipline.” Turn it into a strength.

Some employers might ask directly if your degree was online. Again, be honest. But frame it positively. The fact that you earned a degree while managing other responsibilities is impressive, not something to hide.

WHAT ABOUT THE SCHOOL NAME?

If you attended a well-known school (ASU, University of Florida, Penn State), the name speaks for itself.

If you attended a school that’s primarily known for online education (SNHU, WGU, UMGC), employers in many industries are familiar with these schools and respect them. Their reputations have grown significantly.

If you’re concerned about name recognition, focus your resume on skills, certifications, projects, and experience rather than relying heavily on the school name. In most cases, once you have a few years of work experience, where you went to school matters much less than what you’ve accomplished.

THINGS TO AVOID

Don’t claim you attended a school you didn’t attend. If your diploma says “University X Online,” that’s what you attended.

Don’t over-explain. Listing your degree with a paragraph about how rigorous your online programme was looks defensive. Just list it normally.

Don’t leave education off entirely because you’re embarrassed about the school. A completed degree is an achievement regardless of where you earned it.
